The fundamentals of successful project delivery remain the same whatever the industry. It is, however, surprising how these fundamentals are often put to one side for various reasons - generally short term gains in time and / or costs. On the other hand, it is also important to recognise that projects don’t have the luxury to proceed without some level of risk. A major contributor to success is therefore related to getting the balance just right. How much time should be spent in selecting the process technology, defining the scope of work and execution plan, building the estimate etc etc? What should the execution plan be? Should modularisation be considered? What would be the most appropriate form of contract? What partners to work with? A few questions amongst many - that are often not even asked until it is too late.
Mobilisation of the project team - to bring the right level of resources (personnel, systems, finance) onto the project when required - and not before. Clear and effective leadership, teamwork, innovation, good communications, clarity of objectives and the right ‘atmosphere’ are other factors leading to a successful project.
Effective planning, cost control, forecasting and reporting are further essentials - giving the project team and corporate management the visibility of what is really happening on the job.
